How to Pack Your Kitchen Before Shifting

The kitchen is the room that decides whether a move feels professional or panicked. It has the most fragile items, the heaviest appliances and the most daily-use things you cannot lose. Packed in the right order, it is also the quickest room to unpack - because good kitchen packing is organised from the first carton.

Clear out in advance, not at the door

Start two or three days before the move. Empty the fridge and pantry, and use up, give away or donate anything you will not carry. Defrost the refrigerator at least a day ahead so it is dry inside and ready to travel upright. Set aside a first-night kit - a plate or two, one pan, the kettle and a spoon - so your first evening never depends on a full unpack.

Heavy things travel in small cartons

Utensils and stacked plates are deceptively heavy, so use small cartons for them and stop at a weight the crew can lift comfortably. Crumple packing paper or use kitchen towels to fill every gap - a carton that rattles is a carton that loses. Wrap glass and ceramic pieces individually in bubble wrap or packing paper before they go near a box.

Liquids, sealed twice

Tape bottle and jar caps, wrap each one individually and stand them upright in a cushioned carton. Oils and pickles travel best when the opening is taped and the jar sits inside a thin plastic bag as a second barrier. Mark the carton clearly, and never stack liquids above documents or electronics in the same box.

Label by shelf, not by feeling

'Utensils - first drawer', 'crockery - top shelf', 'masala jars'. A label that names the destination spot saves an hour of searching on the first evening, and it lets the crew place cartons in the right part of the new kitchen without asking you ten times.

Appliances: save the big ones for the professionals

Small appliances travel late in the packing day - cords coiled, taped and padded. Refrigerators move upright with doors taped, shelves secured and the condenser coil protected. Washing machines need the drum fixed and water lines properly disconnected. None of this is a DIY job; a trained crew handles large appliances with the right technique so nothing is dented on the road.

What never goes in the truck

Gas cylinders and any flammable liquids are never carried by professional movers - they are a safety risk to the crew and the truck. Perishables should be finished or donated before moving day, and check the gas regulator and connections at the new home ahead of arrival so cooking can restart without waiting on a technician.

Unpack in the order that serves you

First the daily essentials and the first-night kit, so the evening meal is possible within hours. Then the labelled cartons by drawer and shelf. Then the appliances and pantry. In this order, your kitchen is usable the same day even if a few cartons sit unopened overnight.
