How to Pack Fragile Items Before Shifting

Fragile things are the reason most of us worry about moving at all. One mirror, one crockery set or one glass-top table is all it takes. The comfort is this: breakables are the easiest items to protect - when you use the right materials and the right order.

The three-materials rule

Bubble wrap cushions the piece itself. Packing paper fills the space around it. The carton takes the weight of everything stacked above. Newspaper is fine for everyday items, but use clean packing paper for light-coloured goods - newsprint leaves marks. Mirrors and framed pictures wrap glass-in, so the surface never touches the box.

One piece, one layer, always

Every plate, glass and bowl gets its own bubble-wrap layer before it goes near a carton. Never nest plates unwrapped - they slide against one another in transit. Glasses get paper stuffed inside to keep their shape, then a wrap outside. Handles wrap first; they snap before anything else.

Cushion the carton, not just the contents

Fragile cartons need a cushion at the bottom, a cushion at the top and firm packing all around. Heavy pieces go lowest, light pieces on top, and the weight should stay sensible - a carton of plates should be easy for one person to lift, which usually means a small carton. Crumple paper into every gap and give the box a gentle shake. If it rattles, it has not been packed yet.

The special items

Large mirrors and glass tops travel best in a furniture blanket over the bubble wrap, carried upright and marked fragile. Screens get corner protection and a padded front face. Lampshades ride in their own carton, and chandelier parts are individually wrapped and labelled so nothing small goes missing. And if something is genuinely expensive or sentimental - artwork, heirloom crockery - that travels in your own car, not in the truck.

Fragile signs only work if the crew sees them

Write FRAGILE on the side and the top - not one corner - and draw a line around the carton so the warning shows no matter how the box sits. Add arrows for items that must stay upright. Moving crews work fast; a carton that advertises its contents clearly is treated the way it needs to be treated.

Load them last, unload them first

Fragile cartons go on top of the stack, never beneath a heavy sofa, and they load last so they come off first. This single habit prevents most of the damage that happens after packing is done. It is also exactly why professional loading is not a casual arrangement of boxes - it is a plan.
